If you’re a North Carolina real estate agent looking at eXp Realty — or already inside it and wondering if you picked the right sponsor — let’s talk. We’re Al and Victoria Pinder. We’re husband and wife. We’re both ICON agents at eXp. And we built our business from scratch in Eastern North Carolina without a recruiter pipeline, without a celebrity name, and without inheriting anyone’s book of business.
That matters because most NC agents looking at eXp are doing the same thing we did — trying to figure out, basically, whether the move is worth it and who you should pick as your sponsor when the choice is permanent.
What This Page Is For
You’ll find a lot of pages telling you eXp is the answer to every problem in real estate. We’re not going to do that. We’re going to lay out:
- What eXp actually offers North Carolina agents in 2026 — the splits, the cap, the revenue share, the stock
- Why your sponsor pick matters more than most agents realize
- What it took us to hit ICON status in Eastern NC, and what it takes here specifically — the things that aren’t true in Charlotte or Raleigh
- Whether eXp is right for new agents in NC, husband-wife teams, or agents thinking about moving from a brand-name brokerage
The Short Version on eXp Realty
eXp Realty is a cloud-based brokerage. No physical offices, no franchise fees, no desk fees. Every agent in NC pays the same thing: an 80/20 commission split until you hit a $16,000 annual cap, then 100 percent for the rest of your year (minus a small per-transaction fee). Same numbers in Greenville as in Manhattan.
What’s different about eXp is what happens with the 20 percent the company keeps. Half of it — the company dollar — gets shared back to agents through the revenue share program. When an agent you sponsor closes a deal, you get a small percentage of the company side, every transaction, for as long as that agent is at eXp. Seven levels deep. Plus stock awards when you cap, when you sponsor productive agents, and when you hit ICON.
That’s the model. The thing the model needs to actually work for you is a sponsor who’ll help you build it.
Why Your eXp Sponsor Pick Is Permanent — and Why That Matters in NC
Here’s the thing nobody tells you up front: when you join eXp and name your sponsor on the Independent Contractor Agreement, that pick is irrevocable. Not “you can switch in a year.” Not “if it doesn’t work out.” Permanent. For your entire career at eXp, the agent you named is the one earning a piece of every transaction you close.
Most NC agents pick the first sponsor they talked to, or whoever recruited them most aggressively, or someone with a famous name. Then they realize their sponsor’s actual response time on a real coaching question is three weeks, or never.
That’s the gap we fill. Al and Victoria don’t sponsor 200 agents. We sponsor a smaller number we can actually coach. We answer questions the same day. We’re in Eastern NC, so when you ask about Pitt County or New Bern or Rocky Mount, we know the answer because we live it. Read more about how to evaluate an eXp sponsor in NC.
The ICON Story — and Why It Matters for the Person You Sponsor With
ICON Agent at eXp is the top recognition. You earn it by closing $500,000 in gross commission income or 20-plus capped transactions in a year, plus event attendance, plus cultural participation. You get up to $16,000 in eXp stock back — basically your cap returned in equity.
Fewer than five percent of eXp agents nationwide hit ICON. Both Al and Victoria did it. We did it as a husband-wife team in Eastern NC, in a market with 600 agents in our home county and where most lead-gen “best practices” assume you’re in a 100,000-agent metro.
The reason that matters for you isn’t bragging rights. It’s that we know what actually works in markets like Greenville, Wilmington, Asheville, and the Triangle. The systems that build a real book here are different from what builds a book in Charlotte. Read our full ICON story.
Are You a Husband-Wife Team? Read This.
If you and your spouse work together in real estate, eXp’s structure is going to look different to you than it does to a solo agent. The cap math, the revenue share, the team rules — all of it changes when you’re working as one unit. We’ve lived this every day for years. Here’s what we’d tell any NC couple looking at eXp.
Brand New to Real Estate?
The number-one search we see from NC agents is “is eXp Realty good for new agents.” Honest answer: it depends entirely on whether your sponsor will actually help you. eXp has the training and the cap math new agents want, but if you’re new and your sponsor disappears after the ICA, you’ll struggle. Here’s the unvarnished version for new NC agents.
Eastern NC Specifically
If you’re in Wilmington, New Bern, Greenville, Rocky Mount, Goldsboro, or anywhere east of I-95, your market is different from the Triangle and Charlotte in ways that matter to your business plan. Most national eXp content doesn’t address that. Eastern NC focus.
