eXp Realty ICON Agents in North Carolina — Our Story Building from Scratch

ICON Agent at eXp is the top recognition in the company. Fewer than five percent of eXp agents nationwide hit it in any given year. Both Al and Victoria Pinder are ICONs — multi-time, in Eastern North Carolina. We built it from scratch, without a celebrity name, without inheriting a book, and in a market where most national best practices don’t apply.

Here’s the actual story — and why it matters for the NC agents we sponsor.

What ICON Actually Means

To earn ICON Agent at eXp, you need:

  • $500,000 in gross commission income in your anniversary year, OR
  • 20 capped transactions after hitting the $16K cap (so 35-plus total transactions in your year), AND
  • Attend two eXp events that year (Shareholder Summit, EXPCON, or approved alternates), AND
  • Pay the ICON qualifying fee, AND
  • Demonstrate cultural participation — the “you have to be a good human” requirement

If you do all that, eXp gives you up to $16,000 in publicly-traded eXp stock. Basically, you earn your cap back as equity. We’ve earned it. We’ve watched the stock vest. It’s real money.

What It Took for Us — The Honest Version

Three things matter most. We’re going to walk through them in order.

1. Years, Not Months

If anyone tells you they hit ICON in their first year at eXp from scratch in a market like Eastern NC, they’re lying or they had a hidden head start. Real production at this level takes a real pipeline, and a real pipeline takes about three years to build right. That’s not pessimism — that’s just what it actually takes when you’re not buying leads or relying on a prior brand’s brand.

2. Systems Over Hustle

Hustle gets you to capped status. Systems get you to ICON. The agents we coach who hit it on the second try almost always say the same thing — they finally stopped working harder and started working from a calendar with a real call list, a real lead-followup system, and a real time budget for prospecting versus servicing. Our Prosperity Agent coaching is built around this.

3. The Right Sponsor

Yes, this matters. We had good sponsors when we joined eXp, and we still got coached up by other ICONs along the way. The agents who get to ICON have someone — usually their sponsor — who’ll answer the hard questions when the deal’s about to fall apart, who’ll help them think through the systems decisions, who’ll show them the math when revenue share starts to compound. Our sponsor philosophy.

Why ICON Status Matters for the Agents We Sponsor

It’s not bragging rights. It’s that we know what works. Most coaches and sponsors are teaching what they read in a book or saw at a conference. We’re teaching what we’ve done — this year, in this market, in the same county our sponsored agents are working.

If you’re an NC agent thinking about ICON, here’s what to do:

  1. Get to capped status first (an 80/20 cap of $16K means $80K in GCI). Don’t worry about ICON until you’re capping.
  2. Build a system that gets you 20 more transactions after the cap. That’s the hard part — doing 35-plus deals a year.
  3. Pick a sponsor who’ll actually coach you through it. Like the kind we are.
